The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at Maharaja Agrasen College has always held the opinion that education cannot be confined to or construed as an activity which is carried out within the four walls of a classroom. Over the years, the Department has remained committed to not merely preparing students for the media industry by making them aware of the theoretical principles associated with the same but by also providing the students with practical exposure capable of orienting them with the challenges awaiting them in the industry.

The introduction of the path-breaking Four Year Under-Graduate Programme called for innovative pedagogical changes which the Department skilfully initiated to propel the process of “Learning by Doing”. In pursuance of the same, this academic year saw Department publish two editions of its newsletter “Macroscope” which went from being an eight page to twelve page tabloid size newsletter. The students of the Department were also involved in the publication of other in-house magazines and newsletters including Agranika, Agrasar, Mimaansa, The Fourth Estate, 10 Beats, Health Mantra and World Recall.

Following the phenomenal success of its 1st National Conference on “Freedom of Expression: Ethical Parameters & Market Forces in Media Industry” in the previous academic year, the Department organized two successive international conferences in the month of February. The 1st International Conference was held on the subject “Integrating Mind, Body & Heart” and was organized on 10th February, 2014. The day-long conference was attended and addressed by leading academicians including Dr Carol L Bobby, President & CEO, CACREP, Virginia, USA, Mr Charles Gressard, Chair, Steering Committee, IRCEP, USA, Dr Sachin Jain, University of South Dacota, Vermillion, USA, Ms. Sylvia Lindinger Sternart, University of Toledo, Ohio, USA, Prof. Hemant Joshi, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dr Avinash Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Delhi and Mr Rajesh Pandey, Retd. Group Captain, Indian Air Force.

The Department organized its 2nd International Conference on “Information & Communication Flow in Third World” on 21st & 22nd February, 2014. Much like the previous international conference, this conference too was a resounding success and was addressed by several stalwarts from the world of academia, policy formulation and media including by Dr. Ashok Ogra, Director, Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, Mr Uday Sinha, Editorial Advisor, Channel 7, Ms PN Vasanti, Director, Centre for Media Studies, Mr Ratneshwar Singh, President, Centre for Readership Development, Dr Alok Puranik, Renowned Columnist & Professor, Mr Ajay Jha, Anchor, Sahara TV, Mr Devesh, Editorial Consultant, NDTV, Mr Tirthankar Ghosh, Managing Editor, Newsline Publications, Mr Anant Vijay, Executive Producer, IBN7, Dr Gopal Singh, Head of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar University and Mr Urmilesh, Rajya Sabha TV. Besides organizing two international conferences, the Department also organized a Symposium on “Economic Reporting & Ethics” by Mr Pramod Rai, Economic Times and two guest lectures on the subjects “Magazine Journalism” & “Women Journalists: Impediments & Challenges in Media Industry” by Mr Vijay Kumar Mishra and Miss Mallica Joshi, respectively.

The students of the Department sharpened their production skills by working on a number of documentaries including "A Bloody Discrimination", "Virasat", "Bharat Ki Sanskriti" and ‘No, I Wasn’t Hit’ which addressed subjects like homosexuality and gender-based violence. Keeping on with the tradition of research based journalism, the students continued their research on “Impact of Facebook on Youth” in association with Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad. The students were also involved in various innovation projects of the college as also other student clubs, initiatives and societies including Student Council, Cultural Council and National Service Scheme. To gain industrial insight, the students interned with reputed media organizations like The Hindu, The Indian Express, Doordarshan, ABP News, Times of India, and Hindustan Times.

The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication was also fortunate to witness many prominent student achievements in the academic year 2013-14. While Ankit Jha and Aditya Prakash of the Department won the 1st Prize in the Quiz Competition at Antardhvani 2014, Vishank Singh and Ankit Jha grabbed the Best Team Prize in the Debate Competition at VIPS Spandan. Mohd. Nabil, Ankit Jha and Aditya Prakash also won the First Prize in the Quiz Competition at Jagran Media Institute’s Media Fest where they were rewarded by renowned Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. The year also saw 3rd year student Saif Ahmad Khan garnering an international publication in the newspaper Arab News while Saket Suman of BJMC 1st Year contributed regularly to The Statesman.

The Department is committed to carrying forward the good work which it has been doing in pursuit of strengthening the fourth pillar of our democracy by readying aspiring journalists to become the torchbearers of the media industry in the days to come.
